Chile mine accident

The Chilean mining accident was the result of a race for profits by mine owners – who may face criminal charges – at a boom time in the price of two metals, combined with a scandalous disregard for safety, according to trade unionists.

Despite a legal requirement, there were no alternative exits from the San Jose copper and gold mine, which has left 33 miners imprisoned 700 metres underground since 5 August. Union efforts to permanently close San Jose and the neighbouring San Antonio mine have failed, despite a spate of fatalities.

The government ordered the closure of the San Jose mine after deaths in 2006 and 2007, but a year later a junior official, allegedly exceeding his powers, authorised its reopening without the owners having installed a stairway in the ventilation passages. This stairway would have saved the 33 men this month. Instead, employees were sacked and non-unionised labour taken on. On 3 July this year a man lost his leg in a rockfall, and later in the month the Labour Department warned of serious safety deficiencies.

Jane Bennett: Industrial Heritage Artist

MUA News

Sydney artist Jane Bennett has been artist in residence on the Hungry Mile for the past 5 years, documenting the end of an era with the closure of our working harbour

Paintings from "The Hungry Mile" at Miller's Point to " Barangaroo" Art by Jane Bennett.

Jane Bennett first exhibited her works with the union as part of the 2008 Laborfest held in conjunction with the MUA Delegates' Conference at Mining and Maritime international seminar in Darling Harbour.

She describes herself as Artist in Residence at the Hungry Mile, East Darling Harbour Wharves as a working port.

"I painted on the wharves; in the midst of the bustle of cars, trucks & forklifts, from the top of the Harbour Control Tower & even from the bridge of the ships," she said.

After the last cargo ship sailed, Jane painted the demolition of the wharves and World Youth Day 2008. Now she is painting the development of Barangaroo and the Hungry Mile commemoration of maritime history on the foreshore.

Monopolies: World food grab

BHP Billiton's bid for Potash Corporation and Canadian fertiliser company Agrium's play for AWB fit in with the growing issue of food security and food shortages. This strategy by huge monopolies, with money to spare and no intention to waste it on reasonable taxes, is a warning of how food shortages and famine may increase feral corporate power.

In "The Coming Famine", Julian Cribb warns we are headed towards global food shortages in the next 40 years because of scarcities of water, good land, energy, nutrients, technology, fish and, significantly, stable climates.

"The coming famine is also complex, because it is driven not by one or two, or even half a dozen factors but rather by the confluence of many large and profoundly intractable causes that tend to amplify one another," Cribb writes. "This means that it cannot be easily remedied by 'silver bullets' in the form of technology, subsidies, or single-country policy changes, because of the synergetic character of the things that power it."

Elsewhere Professor Cribb writes:

"The fall in Australia’s international standing in agricultural science is reflected the fact that we provided almost none of the 400 scientists asked by the World Bank to report on the challenges facing global agriculture. Only a decade or so ago we were world leaders in this field.

The solutions to this phase of the global food challenge are laid out in the IAASTD report, which Australia has refused to support (along with the US and Canada) because we did not like the claim that GM crops were not the “silver bullet” some insist them to be, especially for poor farmers. We are thus out of step with world scientific opinion about what needs to be done."

August 31: Bandleader Lionel Hampton died on this day in 2002 ...

... he was 94 when he died from congestive heart failure.

Born in Louisville, Kentucky, jazz vibraphonist, percussionist, bandleader and actor, Lionel Hampton learned to play the xylophone and drums in the 1920s. He moved to California in 1927, playing drums for the Dixieland Blues-Blowers.
In 1930 Louis Armstrong came to California and hired the Les Hite band, asking Lionel if he would play vibes on two songs; he did and popularized the instrument ever since.

During the early 1930s he studied music at the University of Southern California. In 1934 he led his own orchestra, and then appeared in the 1936 Bing Crosby film "Pennies From Heaven" alongside Louis Armstrong, wearing a mask in a scene while playing drums.

In November 1936, the Benny Goodman Orchestra came to Los Angeles, and Goodman went to Hampton play. Goodman asked Hampton to join the Benny Goodman Trio, made up of Goodman, Teddy Wilson, and Gene Krupa, expanding it into the Benny Goodman Quartet. The Trio and Quartet were among the first racially integrated jazz groups to record and play before wide audiences, and were a leading small-group in an era when jazz was dominated by big bands.

Lionel ranks among the great names in jazz history, having worked with a who's who of jazz musicians, from Benny Goodman and Buddy Rich to Charlie Parker to Quincy Jones.

Among the many honors he has received, in 1984 he received the Jazz Hall of Fame Award from the Institute of Jazz Studies, and In 1992, he was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame.

"Take a chance!  All life is a chance.  The man who goes the furthest is generally the one who is willing to do and dare."

1888 - 1955

Many of us are afraid to take a risk, to try something new.  We keep waiting for the right time.  Unfortunately, there is never going to be a right time.  When we stop risking, we start dying one day at a time.  The more safe we feel the less risk we take.  Security and safety are illusions of the mind.  We are never 100% safe.  Is there a risk that you should be taking but are not?  Take the risk.

SONG OF THE WEEK - "Pack Up" by Eliza Doolittle

 "Pack Up" by Eliza Doolittle

"And I'm trying to care a little less
When I google I get depressed
I was taught to dodge those issues I was told
Don't worry
There's no doubt..."

Already a top ten hit in England and Ireland. 22-year old English singer-songwriter, Eliza Doolittle is proving that everything that is old is new again. Doolittle puts her mark on this sunny dance-hall inspired gem that borrows the lyric from a World War I marching song called "Pack Up Your Troubles In Your Old Kit-Bag" (1915). Fresh and unique, Doolittle is an artist to watch.

Mike & Carol news

All is chaos here.

Our Charleston house is under sales contract, scheduled to close on October 15th.

A week ago, after researching moving costs & Argentine customs law, we decided to unload everything. Between Craigslist, garage sale, & friends, we've sold a lot. The 2nd & final garage sale will be this coming Saturday. Our house has 4 garage doors at ground level under the living space. This is the first time we've found them all useful. The hundreds of trips up & down stairs have not been fun.

In the middle of all this, we completed the design stage of our La Estancia house with Calchaqui Homes, chose a builder, signed the contract, & wired money. We hope to hear that building has begun within the next two weeks.

On September 13th, we fly to Hawaii, where we will live until our La Estancia house is ready. We'll be in Cafayate for the October event & hope to see many of you there.

August 30: Sterling Morrison, guitarist and bassist for Velvet Underground died on this day in 1995.

He died two days after his 53rd birthday from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Holmes Sterling Morrison, Jr. was an original member of the rock group The Velvet Underground. Besides guitar and bass, he also sang back-up vocals.

Morrison met Lou Reed - another founding member of Velvet Underground, met at Syracuse University. In 1965, Morrison, Reed and John Cale teamed up to form Velvet Underground in New York City.

The name The Velvet Underground came from a book about the secret sexual subculture of the early '60s by Michael Leigh.

In 1971 Morrison earned a Ph.D. in medieval studies from The University of Texas at Austin while the band spent the summer in Kansas City. When it was time for the group to leave for New York, he carried an empty suitcase to the airport and at the departing gate told the others he was leaving the band and staying in Texas. in the 1980s, Morrison left his academic career to become the captain of a Houston tugboat.

In 1992, the core Velvet Underground line-up of Reed, Cale, Morrison and Tucker decided to reform for a tour and possible album. Morrison died in 1995.

Upon their induction in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, Reed, Cale and drummer Maureen Tucker performed a song entitled "Last Night I Said Goodbye to My Friend," which was dedicated to Morrison.

Jewel - "The Shape of You"

Jewel's live performance at this year's Emmy Awards reminded the world of what a beautiful and poetic singer she still is. She sang her song (co-written by David Lee & Dallas Davidson) "The Shape of You" during the in memoriam portion of the live telecast. One of the night's definite highlights. The song is available only as a single and is not included on Jewel's latest album, "Sweet and Wild" (2010). Below is a live performance from a concert in May 2009.

Available for download @ iTunes.

Update: As of Tuesday 12:00am est. "The Shape of You" was charting at #60 & #67 @ the Canadian & American iTunes stores respectively.

We are responsible for our own happiness and success.  Others are not responsible to make us happy.  Not our spouses.  Not our children.  Not our parents.  Life is full of challenges and difficulties.  Nothing is perfect.  If we blame others, we will never be happy.  We must learn to forgive and move on.  We must take charge of our inner world and resolve to be satisfied and happy.

Blue Mountains: Bitumen bandits!

Acting Fair Trading Minister Linda Burney is warning Blue Mountains residents to beware of bitumen bandits offering to lay asphalt on driveways, landscaping and cleaning at cheap rates.

Ms Burney said Fair Trading was investigating reports of itinerant traders attempting to scam locals at Warrimoo and Blaxland with cheap bitumen laying offers.

"The traders are currently using a flyer entitled "Emerald Asphalt & Paving" offering a large range of services including asphalting, fencing, bricklaying and landscaping services," she said.

"None of the workers hold an appropriate licence.

Ms Burney said Fair Trading has operational people in the field tracking the movements of these shonks.

"Bitumen bandits generally target older, vulnerable people in rural and regional areas and have been subject to ongoing Fair Trading investigations," she said.

Ms Burney said Fair Trading issued warnings on bitumen bandits on four occasions last year and three times this year when they appeared on the south coast, north coast and on the outskirts of south-western Sydney.

"A group was caught operating in Taree, Old Bar and Tinonee in February last year," she said.

"Three penalty notices worth $2,250 were issued."

Ms Burney said the bandits use a seemingly plausible reason to gain people's confidence and, in the worst cases, lie in wait for people to leave their homes.

"They will often say they have leftover material from a local council job or Roads and Traffic Authority job and can do a good price," she said.

"They also ask for cash in hand and are known to keep a watch on homeowners to see when they leave their property.

"When they do, the bandits will turn up with a large group and start laying bitumen without consent."

Ms Burney said bitumen bandits often attempted to bully residents into paying for substandard work.

"After completing the work, the bandits quickly leave the area and consumers are unable to contact them or obtain refunds or warranties," she said.

"I urge residents to contact Fair Trading immediately on 13 32 20 if they have been approached by bitumen bandits.

"Wherever possible, get the car rego of the bandits and any other identifying information, such as contact details, including mobile phone numbers."

"If you have a gift, it is your halo and your cross.  There is no choice.  You are what you are, what you have been born.  And what is inherent in that condition is the loneliness that goes with it."

1928 -

We all have gifts.  Some that we know about and some that we don't. We need to accept our gifts and celebrate them.  The ability to create is a gift.  Whether you are a painter, a poet or a novelist, you have a gift.  Some days you will wish you didn't have the gift.  It will feel like a burden you have to bear.  Other days you will feel as if you are blessed because of your gift.  And there will be those who don't understand your gift.  They won't understand why you have to wake up at 4 am to paint, to write and to create.  They will ask why you can't be normal like everyone else.  And there will be days you ask yourself the same question.  "Why can't I be normal?  Why do I have to write?"  The answer is simple: you are blessed with a gift.  Accept it and thank the heavens that you have been blessed.
