Facundo Cabral: victim of drug violence

The news stunned, angered and saddened people all over Latin America, as well as many Latinos in Chicago: Argentinian singer-songwriter Facundo Cabral was shot to death early Saturday morning on his way to the airport in Guatemala City.

Throughout that day, people all over the Spanish-speaking world expressed on social media their consternation at the shocking reports that gunmen killed Cabral in an ambush. His manager and concert promoter were seriously injured in the attack.

Guatemalan authorities confirmed that the target of the attack was the concert promoter — possibly because of troubles with organized crime — who was driving the vehicle in which Cabral was a passenger. Two suspects have been arrested.

Cabral appears to be the latest prominent victim of the drug violence that continues to rage south of our border. On the same weekend he was killed, about 170 people were killed in Mexico in drug-related violence.

In 1966, the United Nations designated Cabral a “worldwide messenger of peace,” making it especially ironic and tragic that the legendary folk singer, a kind of Pete Seeger and Bob Dylan combined, became a victim of the horrific violence that plagues Mexico and that has spread to Guatemala and other Central American countries.

Born into poverty in 1937 in the province of Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, Cabral in the 1970s became one the most popular voices against military dictatorships in Latin America. He mixed political protest themes with poetry-infused lyrics and, in a career that spanned several decades, recorded about a dozen albums.

His song “No Soy de Aqui, No Soy de Alla” (I’m Not from Here, I’m Not from There”) became an international hit and was translated into many languages. Among those who later recorded the song were Julio Iglesias and Neil Diamond.

Cabral was forced to leave Argentina for exile in Mexico when the military took over in the mid-1970s. He returned to Argentina after the military government collapsed in 1982, at which point he became even more famous.

Cabral performed several times in the Chicago area. His last concert was at the Olympia Theater in Cicero in 2009, where people lined up to get tickets.

Vicente Serrano, host of a local Spanish-language radio show, brought Cabral to the Chicago area for that last performance. Serrano, who described Cabral as “irreverent,” remembers how the singer fell in love with the Chicago skyline and the Art Institute of Chicago. “Facundo cried when we went to visit the Art Institute because he said he was moved by its beauty,” Serrano said.

At the concert in Cicero, Serrano recalled, the audience constantly interrupted Cabral with adoring comments, cheers and applause. But Cabral was used to that. He was as much a poet-philosopher as a singer and, in concert, typically mixed his songs with deeply thoughtful musings about social justice, politics, philosophy and religion.

Cabral overcame personal loss and illness. He lost his wife and infant daughter in an airplane crash in 1978, and he was later diagnosed with cancer.

“Neither the military dictatorship or cancer defeated Cabral,” Serrano said.

I can only share the outrage of many in Chicago and condemn the senseless killing of an artist who stood for peace. And I join my voice to the now iconic cry of Mexicans and Mexican Americans who feel overwhelmed, angry and exhausted with the drug violence: “Estamos hasta la madre” — “We are fed up.” That is what thousands of Mexicans shouted during a recent street demonstration.

In Buenos Aires on Wednesday, hundreds of mourners came out to say goodbye to Facundo Cabral.

I hope his death was not in vain.

Hugh Hefner has admitted that he had no idea Crystal Harris was going to call off their wedding

The ceremony, which was planned for June 18th, was cancelled by Harris who got engaged to Hefner on Christmas Eve 2010.

Speaking to CNN's Piers Morgan, Hefner said: "I think the real problems began a couple of months before the wedding... We went to London, about five or six weeks before, and things did not seem quite the way they ought to be. She was preparing a song for the first time and I think her focus was on that.

Although he says he didn't see it coming, he did reveal that Harris expressed some doubts about the wedding the week before the ceremony.

He explained: "The previous weekend, she and I went to a jazz festival, and when we got back from the festival, we sat down and she said that she was really having some serious reservations about the marriage - not about the relationship, but about the marriage,"

"I said, 'Look, the marriage is not the important part to me, the relationship is important. If you're happier single, that's okay with me, we can work out the details'. That was only half the story obviously, because the next morning, without my knowledge, she was packing the bags."

85-year-old Hefner said that he believed it was time for him to settle down and thought Harris was the one. "You know, I was ready to settle down, I figured it was about time!"

inflation: official or real?

[from MercoPress, 15 July 2011]

Argentines would like to buy at “official” inflation and be paid in real inflation

According to Argentina’s statistics office Indec consumer inflation was 0.7% pushed mostly by the cost of clothing. However private economic consulting offices estimate the index was double the official announcement.

Indec inflation in the last twelve months reached 9.7% and 4.7% in the first half of 2011. But the so called Congress inflation index released on Wednesday was 1.52% and totalling 25% in the last twelve months,

The wholesale prices index in June was 0.9% and 6.1% so far this year. The cost of construction has risen 0.7% and 6.3% in the first half of 2011.

The consumer inflation item which had the highest impact in June was clothing with 1.7%, followed by home equipment and maintenance, 1% and transport and telecommunication, 0.8%

Food and beverage; education and housing and basic services increased 0.6% while medical attention and health care, 0.5%. According to Indec in the food item, peppers soared 14,.2%; lettuce, 6.9% and tomatoes, 6.8%. On the other extreme oranges were down 19.6%; lemon, 10.2% and carrots, 6.3%. Fruits overall increased 1.6% in June; dairy and poultry produce 0.7%; cooking oil, bakery and vegetables, 0.6% and beef, 0.4%.

“Items which represent 62% of the basket suffered an increase of 0.9% while services which represent the remaining 38%, experienced a variation of 0.4% compare to the previous month (May)”, said the Indec report.

Argentine central bank purchases 500m dollars to stop appreciation of the Peso

The Argentine Central bank has purchased so far this week 500 million US dollars to ensure that the country’s exporters retain a favourable exchange rate and importers are not that tempted to buy foreign goods.

This is exactly the opposite to what is happening in the three other Mercosur full members, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay, which have been literally ‘flooded’ with dollars causing a strong appreciation of local currencies and a boom of imports.

Following the intervention the central bank has managed to keep the US dollar ‘flat’ at 4.10 and 4.15 Pesos, sale and purchase, while the local currency is not forcibly appreciated because of the influx of foreign capital, from exporters and from assets looking for better profitability than in developed countries.

Earlier this week the Central bank doubled the average amount of US dollars it was purchasing in support of the greenback. Last Friday the bank purchased 35 million dollars; on Monday, 30 million; Tuesday, 100 million; Wednesday, 180 million and Thursday, 150 million.

Bella Jacket `Twilight` Problematic

''Bella Swan in Twilight wearing this jacket and managed to hook the sexiest vampire in the school. You can too!''

That sentence contained in a blue canvas jacket containing advertising Bella Swan, a character in Twilught played by Kristen Stewart SUMMIT Entertainment, the studio responsible behind the making of 'Twilight', requires a retailer that sells the advertised jacket worn by Bella Swan, one of the characters 'Twilight', starring Kristen Stewart.

Last week, the studios filed suit against BB Dakota women's designer clothing, for alleged infringement of copyright and trademarks.

On the site told Reuters his company, BB Dakota advertise a blue canvas jacket with writing like this: ''Bella Swan in Twilight wearing this jacket and managed to hook the sexiest vampire in the school. You can too!''

When the jacket began to circulate in 2008, Women's Wear Daily called it a''legendary creator of goods.''While the MTV site says it''makes the jacket
more closely with Robert Pattinson.

''While the site Stylist.com call it a ''love bites, uh,''the first view at an affordable price.

Entertainment Weekly even tells a brief overview of how the jacket can go into the first film. Apparently, Stewart should be wearing a brown hoodie.

But, blue is considered to be better suited with brown hair, so the costume designer Wendy Chuck went to Nordstrom and grab a piece of blue jacket from the rack. In his complaint, Summit wants a court order banning further sales of these products.

Including all the advantages of selling jackets, as well as the destruction of all the jacket.

Rafael Alberti

"In the very beginning I looked to painting as the medium for addressing concerns in shapes and colors.  Then it was poetry where these concerns found expression through the medium of word and metaphor."

Rafael Alberti

Spanish Painter, Poet

1902 - 1999

I am fascinated by creative leaders who use more than one medium to express themselves.  Rafael Alberti was one of those who was at home both in the visual arts and the written word.  The need to create and communicate one's feelings transcends the medium.  Some writers work in short stories, novels, poetry and plays.  Some artists paint, draw and sculpt.  And then there are the writers who also paint and the painters who also write.  Or the musicians who paint and the actors who play music.  We all have the urge to express ourselves.  The medium of paint, words or music is just the vehicle to carry the communication.

What vehicles do you like to use to express your artistic desires?  Poetry?  Music?  Painting?  Acting?  Plays?  Dancing?  Sculpting?  Novels?  Short Stories?  Have you stepped outside your comfort zone and tried something new?

Judge orders formal investigation into Neruda’s death

New insight into case questions death record that state poet died of prostate cancer.

The circumstances surrounding the death of Chile’s legendary poet Pablo Neruda have caused rumors and speculations for years.

The date, for example, September 23, 1973 — only 12 days after Augusto Pinochet’s military coup and the death of then President Salvador Allende — sparked legends that Neruda, a leader of the communist and close friend of Allende, died of a broken heart.

Up until recently, however, most Chileans — including the Neruda family — consented with death records stating that the writer died on September 23, 1973 at the Santa María Clinic in Santiago of advanced prostate cancer.

But in light of new information on the case, investigators have reconsidered this position. Most recently, after pressure from the Chilean Communist Party, Marío Carroza, the judge leading the investigation, reopened the case last month.

Suspicion over Neruda’s death arose this year after Manuel Araya, Neruda’s personal assistant and chauffeur, claimed during an interview with Mexican newspaper Proceso that the writer did not die of cancer but was assassinated.

Araya’s claims have been backed by testimony from Mexican ambassador Gonzalo Martínez Corbala, who was with Neruda when he died.

Upon admission to the clinic, Corbala claims, Neruda was in a stable condition and was finalizing plans to flee to Mexico in the wake of coup. Corbala has not personally expressed suspicion over Neruda’s death, but has confirmed that later that day a clinic doctor injected Neruda with a “calming substance” and he went into cardiac arrest and died soon after.

Columbus Bring Syphilis to Europe?

Said that in the 18th century, the philosopher Voltaire called the discoverer of the Americas, Christopher Columbus, as carriers of syphilis to Europe in the 15th century. Now, a study to prove the same thing.

Recorded syphilis venereal disease was first discovered among the French mercenaries who arrived in Naples, Italy, in 1495. From Naples, syphilis then expand to the rest of Europe.

At the end of the 15th century, syphilis was commonly known as the 'Spanish disease' in Scotland, Belgium, and Portugal. While Italy, Germany and Britain called it a "disease of Naples'.

Well, two years before the disease was recorded in Naples that is 1493, Columbus had just returned from his adventure to the New World, America.
Historians believe that the mercenary army that was the crew of Columbus who contracted the disease from Native American women.

But the evidence is very common. In fact, many experts argue, syphilis originated in Europe, then brought to America, mutate and then brought back to Europe.

That's based on phylogenetic evidence, a science that examines the evolutionary chain between organisms. A team led by Kristin Harper of Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia, who did it. The team compared the different types of families of bacteria called treponemes that cause syphilis and related diseases 3 of 26 places around the world.
They found syphilis is the latest family member of treponeme. Syphilis is a close cousin of a tropical disease called yaws or yaws. Yaws is a more benign skin disease from syphilis and was transmitted through sex.

The hypothesis the researchers were, Columbus crew is infected with yaws, then the bacteria to travel deep into the cooler and drier in Europe and develop into syphilis.

"When this genetic data combined with extensive documentary evidence, the hypothesis of Columbus for syphilis is getting stronger," says the study, as quoted by AFP on Thursday (17/01/2008).

Or yaws yaws itself are also not native to America. Yaws from syphilis caused by Treponema pallidum that, which were not initially infected. Then the bacteria were brought to the New World and evolved so yaws.

After developing a disease that infects so, then the sailors were brought back to Europe. Treponema pallidum also raged into diseases such as syphilis are known now.

John Cheever

"The need to write comes from the need to make sense of one's life and discover one's usefulness."

American Novelist

1912 - 1982

We all have a need to understand our lives and the things that happen to us.  Some turn to religion.  Others turn to history or politics or science.  Creative leaders turn to their art.  The stories we tell help us to make sense of who we are and why we are here.  And often we change the facts of our lives to tell a better story.  What stories are you telling in your artistic works?  How have you altered the facts of your stories to tell a greater truth?

John Cheever is a perfect example of a writer who rewrote his life in his short stories and novels.  Born on May 27, 1912, John Cheever was the unwanted second child.  His father tried to convince his mother to have an abortion.  A storyteller from a young age, Cheever read Proust's In Search of Lost Time at the age of fourteen.  He dropped out of high school and never went to college.  He sold his first story to The New Republic at age 18.  For more than twenty years he published only short stories.  His first novel was not published until he was in his mid-forties.  In 1979 three years before his death, he won a Pulitzer Prize for a collection of his short stories that I highly recommend all creative leaders read.

SONG OF THE WEEK - "Would You Say Stop" by Acid House Kings

"Would You Say Stop" by Acid House Kings

"...but I would never ever let you go,
And if someone ever breaks my heart
I still hope that is you..."

Who does pop music better than the Swedes? ABBA, Robyn, Miike Snow, Peter Bjorn & John, Lykke Li, The Radio Dept. and a host of other fine artists have been showcasing how innovative popular music is made for years. Another fine export from Sweden is the dream-pop band called Acid House Kings. Their song, "Would You Say Stop" is the first single from their 5th studio album, The Music Sounds Better With You (2011). A perfect example of a great catchy summer pop song.

naming streets

[a big thank you to Pete F. who pointed me to this article from David Cummings @ Escape from America Magazine, 11 July 2011]

A Short History of Argentina in its Street Names

No matter in which town, big or small you find yourself in Argentina you notice the same street names time after time. It doesn’t matter if you are in Buenos Aires or Tapalque where my estancia, La Margarita, is located you will still find these street names again and again.

One thing is for sure Argentina is proud of its heroes and anniversaries. But who are these heroes and what happened on these dates that have streets named after them in almost every town in Argentina? The In answer to these agonizing questions here are answers to the ten most popularly named streets so that the next time you find yourself in say Av. 9 de Julio in Buenos Aires you will know just what happened on that date – pub quizzes will have no fear for you after you read this short article!

What was amazing on researching this little article I decided to ask my Argentine friends to give me the low down on their heroes and famous dates – the only one they could really be sure of was St Martin and even then they weren’t quite sure of the facts – so this article will no doubt not only appeal to the tourists amongst you but to those Argentines who missed a few history lessons at school – it’s all fascinating stuff so here goes:

Av.9 de Julio: Almost without exception all towns in Argentina will have a street named Av.9 de Julio. It will also normally be the main street. Av.9 de Julio in Buenos Aires is said to be the widest avenue in the world – that’s arguable but it’s certainly wide and crossing it you have plenty of time to reflect on why it’s thought to be this as you dodge the traffic light jumpers.

In fact the 9th of July 1816 was the date that Argentina finally declared Independence from Spain. Declared by the Congress of Tucumán as United Provinces of South America, which is still a legal name of the Argentine Republic. Due to the disruptions in Spain, Argentina saw its chance to be rid of the hated Spanish (they obviously knew about the coming Costa del Sol questionable vacations). A congress was arranged on March 24, 1816 and the idea was to vote for independence. It took until 9th July 1816 to finally declare a state of Independence in Argentina. The house where the historic declaration was made in Tucumán has been rebuilt and is now a museum and monument open to tourists.

Trinidad González Bernardino Rivadavia
Av. Rivadavia: Av. Rivadavia in Buenos Aires was originally the main thoroughfare out of the city before the auto routes were built – try it on a Friday night and you will lose the will to live. It still is a very important route out of the city but just who was Señor Rivadavia and why is he responsible for all those traffic jams?

Trinidad González Bernardino Rivadavia to give him his full name was a lieutenant when the British invaded Argentina. He was elected to be the first President of Argentina. He was appointed by the then Congress in February 8, 1826 until July 7 1827 – a pretty short term the reason being that the same Congress that elected him was dissolved in 1827. He continued to serve his country for some time after but eventually retired to Spain (Costa del Sol no doubt!) where he died in 1845. His remains were repatriated to Argentina in 1857, receiving honors as Captain General. Today his remains rest in a mausoleum located in the Plaza Miserere, adjacent to Av.Rivadavia named in his honor.

Av. Belgrano: Named after Manuel Belgrano who was an important figure in the creation of Argentina. He participated in The War of Independence against Spain. His most lasting contribution is that he created the flag of Argentina in the town of Rosario. He also oddly supported the idea of a monarchy in Argentina headed by a noble Inca but failed (luckily some may say) to gain support. He died June 20th 1820. June the 20th is a national holiday to recognize this and it is around this day that children at school dress in light white clothing on the coldest day of the year to honor the flag.

Av. Pueyrredón: Juan Martin Pueyrredón was responsible for organizing a team of volunteers against the English in 1806. He was defeated, but later united with the army of Liners to recapture the city in August of that year. He had the vision to see that anarchy was on the horizon in Argentina and he resigned his post in 1819 as supreme director of Argentina. He unfortunately was proved right about anarchy and disorder in Argentina and in 1820 civil war came to Argentina- some say the disorder never went away judging by the driving.

Domingo Faustino Sarmiento
Sarmiento: Domingo Faustino Sarmiento born on 15th Feb 1811 was an Argentine activist, intellectual, writer statesman and was the seventh President of Argentina (1868-1874). His claim to fame in Argentina was the opposition to the dictatorship of Rosas and the support he gave to get democracy for Latin America. He was responsible for introducing and modernizing the train system here and the postal system (umm wish he was around now – there is still work to be done!). He was a champion of education and introduced a comprehensive education system. Sarmiento is also said to have introduced the first vines to Argentina from Chile.

He died in Paraguay in aged 77 but is still one of the most respected Argentines. He is buried in Buenos Aires.

25 de Mayo: The May Revolution was a week-long series of revolutionary events that took place from May 18th to May 25th 1810 in Buenos Aires against the Spanish and it eventually succeeded in ousting Spain’s control of Argentina. It was a time when Napoleon’s France, who had taken over half the country in 1810, had weakened Spain. However, it took until 9th July 1816 for Argentina to be fully rid of Spain and gain it true independence.

Bartolomé Mitre: Bartolomé Mitre was, amongst other things, President of Argentina. He was born in the City of Buenos Aires in a building on the corner of Suipacha and Lavalle. Like many of his contemparies he went into exile for his opposition to the murderous Rosas. He returned to Argentina after the defeat of Rosas and in 1862 was elected President of Argentina. During his tenure he introduced the metric system. He was also involved in the Triple Alliance where Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina united to go to war against Paraguay – one of Latin Americas saddest days – Paraguay never recovered.

He is buried in the cemetery in Recoleta.

Almirante Brown: Almirante Brown was Irish being born in County Mayo Ireland in 1777. He was the first Admiral of the Argentina Navy. He is said to have served in the British Royal Navy before coming to Argentina in 1810. He battled against the Spanish, Brazilians and other enemies of Argentina but refused to have anything to do with internal conflict when civil war came. He died in 1857.

José Francisco de San Martín
Plaza San Martín: Last but not least, no doubt about it, José Francisco de San Martín, born in the Province of Corrientes in Argentina 1778, is the hero of Argentina and is considered the founding son of the country. He fought for Spain against Napoleon and in 1812 came to Argentina to start his campaign against his former employers Spain in the liberation of Chile, Argentina and Peru.

He famously marched across the Andes in the January of 1817 to defeat the Spanish and liberate Chile – no mean feat in the days before there was a Mc Donald’s or Starbucks on each corner.

After his wife died in 1873 he became disillusioned with Argentina (he knew the Kirchners were coming maybe) and started his plans to return to Europe. He settled in Boulogne sur Mer where he died in August 1850. His remains were eventually brought back to Argentina and he is buried in Catedral Metropolitana de Buenos Aires, Argentina located in the Plaza De Mayo.

So there you have it the next time you are in Buenos Aires or even Tapalque you will be able to impress your friends and family with your supreme knowledge of Argentine heroes and celebrations dates.

Two arrested over murder of Facundo Cabral

Cabral, 74, who sang protest songs famous across Latin America and beyond and was a UN "peace messenger", was on his way to the airport to leave the country when his vehicle came under heavy fire on Saturday.

Two Guatemalans, Elgin Vargas and Wilfred Stokes, were arrested by police investigating the killing.

Cabral's music promoter Henry Farina, a Nicaraguan who owns a chain of strip clubs, was believed to be the target of the attack, according to Carlos Menocal, Guatemala's Interior Minister.

Farina, who was driving the car at the time of the shooting, was badly injured and remains in a critical condition in hospital.

"One (of the killers) is the head of a band of assassins," Attorney General Claudia Paz told reporters. "He put together this group to commit murders."

The two men were allegedly caught on tape by security cameras at Cabral's hotel and also along the highway on the way to the airport.

The motive for the attack was not yet clear, authorities said, although they believe the criminal mastermind is likely a foreigner from elsewhere in Central America.

Guatemala is one of the world's most dangerous countries with a rate of 50 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants in 2010 - six times the global average.

Pinal, Arizona City slammed by biggest dust storm

With winds estimated at about 45 mph, a storm Tuesday evening blotted out the sun, sent debris flying through some neighborhoods, knocked down trees and damaged some street signs, traffic lights and some electrical systems in western Pinal County. The next day, July 6, crews were busy cleaning up the mess.

The storm was powerful enough to attract national news coverage. CNN reported that the storm was over 70 miles wide, 10,000 feet high and featured winds as high as 75 to 85 miles per hour.
South of Maricopa, Pinal County Public Works crews were dispatched to clear debris that had blown into the roads, said Joe Pyritz, public information officer for Pinal County.

The area of Silverbell Estates and Arizona City received some temporary road flooding from rainfall, but water reportedly subsided soon after the storm passed. North of Marana, crews placed barricades up on Park Link Drive, Camino Adelante and Missile Base Road due to flooding, but the barricades were removed by Wednesday morning, Pyritz said.

In Casa Grande, there were reports of debris in roads, downed street signs and damage to some traffic signals, said Augustin Avalos, public information officer. Only drops of rain fell in Casa Grande.

The storm caused about 15 fire alarm system activations and resulted in a few calls for emergency services throughout the city, Jim Morgan, Casa Grande assistant fire chief, said.

Arizona Public Service Co. customers did not lose power due to the storm, and Jenna Shaver, a spokeswoman for the company, said that all lines were intact.

About 5,100 customers of Electrical District 3 in the Maricopa area were left without power for a few hours after winds and debris loosened connections, causing outages, said Tony Solano, system operations manager.

“We had 12 circuits opened because of winds,” Solano said.

Customers without power were located throughout the district and most had electrical service returned by midnight.

Solano said the first reports of power outages were received by about 7:15 p.m. The company deployed crews, but their job was made difficult due to near-zero visibility, winds and rain.

“They started troubleshooting and then the rains started,” he said.

The storm did not knock down any power lines or poles in ED3, but Wednesday morning crews were adjusting a few poles that were leaning, according to Solano.

Gusting winds and dust may have been a factor in at least one traffic accident. Eastbound lanes on Interstate 8 near Bianco Road were closed for several hours Tuesday evening after an empty semi-trailer truck was overturned and blocked traffic. The driver reportedly had minor injuries and weather was believed to be the primary factor in the accident, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

No other major accidents were reported due to the storm.

“We surprisingly did not have a lot of incidents due to the dust storm last night. I suspect it was due to the fast-moving nature of the storm,” DPS Media Relations Coordinator Bart Graves said.

The Phoenix Valley also was hit by high winds, where an amateur weather station measured one gust at 81 mph.

Stratford youth had inside look at last shuttle launch.

He looked first at the jet-black sky and then peered through the telescope's eyepiece, seeing the image of our nearest planetary neighbor some 49 million miles away. The 16-inch Cassegrain telescope with the 4-inch refractor showed the reddish colors and some of the details of Mars. Stratford's Elliot Severn was hooked.

Severn was just 10 years old when his parents took him to the observatory at Boothe Park in the summer of 2001 to see noted astronomer John Dobson host one of his famous "sidewalk astronomy" lectures. And after Dobson's talk, Severn lined up, with dozens of others, to look through the park's telescope. Not only did he see Mars, but he also looked at the moon, with all its incredible craters, massive mountains and grayish hues.

He hasn't stopped looking since.

Severn is 19 now, a junior to be at Alfred University in Alfred, N.Y. His love of space hasn't ever changed. Severn -- aka, astroholic007 (his Twitter name) -- was one of 150 people to be selected by NASA to Tweet a behind-the-scenes perspective of the launch of Space Shuttle Atlantis. It was the 135th -- and last -- launch of the space shuttle program, which roared off pad 39A Friday morning at 11:29 a.m.

Severn was one of 5,500 people who originally signed up for the Tweet-up opportunity back in June and is tweeting for NASA's 1.5 million followers.

"I had forgotten about it, to be honest," Severn said of the sign-up. "I had been trying to get some tickets to view the launch and when it didn't work out, I was kind of bummed. But that same day when I found out I wasn't getting the tickets I got the email from NASA."

At the crack of dawn last Wednesday, Severn flew to Orlando and made his way to the Kennedy Space Center to begin a whirlwind period that had him visit the Space X facilities (and see the Dragon capsule that orbited the Earth last December), speak with NASA associate administrator for space operations, Bill Gerstenmaier, and interview shuttle astronaut Mike Massimino.

Severn got his first telescope when he was nine. It was a 10-inch Dobsonian and he still has it, along with another that he's built. He's seen the moons of Jupiter and the planet's clockwise and counterclockwise swirling cloud bands. He's seen sun spots, the rings of Saturn, the Martian ice caps. He's looked at galaxies, seen stars forming and stars dying.

He will never stop looking at the night sky.

And, yes, he's had the dream, as have so many others, of being an astronaut. And while NASA moves through this transition phase from the end of the shuttle era to a new future, highlighted potentially with a landing on an asteroid or Mars by the late 2020s, Severn feels his best chance to making it to space one day might come from another route -- Space X, for one.

"I know it's unlikely to be chosen to be an astronaut, but with commercial space travel? Who knows?" Severn said. "I'd love to go into space."

Never Buy the Sun

A Song by Billy Bragg©Billy Bragg 2011

Never Buy the Sun, was written in the wake of the News of the World hacking scandal. It also refers to the Sun's sales in Liverpool, which never recovered after its coverage of the 1989 Hillsborough stadium disaster

Bragg, who is appearing at the Tolpuddle Martyrs Trade Union Festival in Dorset on Sunday 17th July, said "Over the past few years, any expression of social solidarity has been scorned – from the new activism of the climate camps and UK Uncut to the more traditional campaigns of the unions – but by sticking to their guns, the people of Liverpool have been vindicated in their principled stand against News International."

Gunns Triabunna sale

Gunns has accepted the $10 million bid by entrepreneurs Graeme Wood and Jan Cameron for the Triabunna woodchip mill.

Gunns has confirmed the sale on the stock exchange.

In a statement, Gunns says the terms of the deal, subject to the forestry statement of principles, allows for the mill to be leased to an industrial operator as a woodchip export business.

It is a condition of Tasmania's interim peace deal that the mill stays in the industry.

Greens leader Nick McKim has described the sale as a significant development for the forest peace process.

Mr McKim says it should be a wake-up call for the state and federal governments to start implementing the forest peace deal.

"The fact that this mill shortly will be owned by a consortium that believes in that statement of principles process rather than an organisation that in effect was a front group for Forestry Tasmania is a very significant development," he said.

"Ideas are like rabbits.  You get a couple and learn how to handle them, and pretty soon you have a dozen."

American Novelist

1902 - 1968

Do you ever have too many ideas?  Sometimes when I am writing I am swamped with ideas and sometimes I don't know which ones to choose.  Writing fiction is full of opportunity.  Do you make the main character tall, short or medium height?  Does he have blonde, black or curly hair?  Does he have physical, social or mental disability?  Hundreds of questions.  Thousands of answers.  Sometimes having too many ideas can become a barrier to creating.  Writing fiction requires making choices — choosing a path to follow and not looking back.  The characters take on a life of their own.

What is the best path to follow?  What are the best choices to make?  Sometimes I have ten ideas, but only two or three are worth keeping.  Don't be afraid of choosing — of following a path to where it takes you.  And keep the ideas coming.  Even bad ideas can lead you somewhere new and inviting.  The good ideas won't appear if there are no bad ideas on which to stand.  Light a candle and watch the ideas grow by leaps and bounds.

For better or worse, his 60's sitcoms hugely influenced everyone, especially me. Schwartz started off writing for Bob Hope's radio show, then for Ozzie and Harriet and "The Alan Young Show." He moved to TV, writing for "I Married Joan" and Red Skelton. Cristina lanzará hoy los programas "Carne de Cerdo y Lácteos para todos"

photo courtesy of Asociación Argentina de Productores Porcinos
