Argentina Boosts Pensions, Aid to Poor Families

BUENOS AIRES – Argentine President Cristina Fernandez announced Wednesday a 16.9 percent increase in payments to pensioners, aiming to preempt efforts by opposition lawmakers to push through a significantly larger boost.

A total of roughly 10 million people are expected to benefit from the pension hike and a 22 percent increase in child subsidies to low-income families.

Starting in September, the minimum pension will be 1,046 pesos ($265) a month, while the monthly child subsidy will rise to 220 pesos ($56) for each minor in qualified households, the president said in nationally broadcast speech.

She said the benefit hikes represent an expenditure equal to 1.35 percent of Argentina’s 2009 gross domestic product, measured at $315 billion.

Gay marriage law in Argentina signals waning Catholic influence

The recent enactment in Argentina of a gay marriage law is being largely viewed to indicate the waning influence of the Catholic church in Argentina–and generally, Latin America.

The law, which allows gay couples to marry and adopt children, is perceived to indicate that there is a greater desire for more liberal social legislation in what had long been viewed as a Catholic stronghold, Reuters said.

The law was signed by President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner on July 21 after bitter legislative debate and strong lobbying from the Catholic church, with a 33-27 vote.

The Catholic church’s failure to derail the law is also indicative of a new cultural direction in Latin America, which is comparable to the experience of Portugal and Spain, both of which have legalized gay marriage despite a strong history of Catholicism and a near-past history of Catholic dictatorships, Time Magazine says.

Among Argentina’s gay community, it is believed that the vote reflects loathing towards the Catholic hierarchy, Marcelo Ernesto Ferreyra of the International Gay & Lesbian Human Rights Commission said. Time Magazine noted that Ferreyra cited the loss of prestige of the Catholic church in Argentina.

Gay marriage is also legal in Mexico City and Uruguay; while Chile’s president Sebastian Pinera also has expressed plans to enhance the rights of same-sex couples, Reuters said. With the new law, RD Magazine said there may be new changes in the future, for example abortion may soon be legalized in Latin America.

Already, a leading candidate for president in Brazil, Dilma Rousseff, has expressed favor for legalized abortion. Of note, Brazil has the highest Catholic population in the world, Reuters said.

Stiglitz exposes mining companies

Nobel Prize-winning US economist Joseph Stiglitz has warned that the mining sector has too much influence on the political debate on Australia's mining tax.

The former World Bank chief economist drew parallels between the advertising campaign run by the Australian mining industry on the resource rent tax and the US finance industry's ability to water down finance-sector reforms passed by Congress.

"[Australian miners] have been overly influential in shaping the debate," Dr Stiglitz said.

He said that to date the windfall gain from the rise in iron ore had gone disproportionately to the companies, while a disproportionately small fraction had gone to Australian citizens.

''The natural resources belong to the people,'' he said. ''You need to have a well-designed competitive auction to have different companies compete so that companies get the necessary returns to do the investment - but the surplus goes to the Australian people.''

Dr Stiglitz compared efforts by the Labor government to gain a better share of wealth from commodities extracted from Australian soil with a plan proposed in the US when he was lead economic adviser to President Bill Clinton.

His warning comes as the Association of Mining and Exploration Companies restarts an ad campaign aimed at forcing the government to revise its minerals resource rent tax.

The Shangri-Las' Marge Ganser, "Leader of the Pack" "Remember, Walking in the Sand," died on this date in 1996 ...

... she was 48 when she passed away.

... Mary Ann died May 14, 1970, and Marge passed away July 28, 1996.
-----
Did you know...

Billy Joel, a then-unknown working as a session musician, played on the demo of "Remember (Walkin' In The Sand)." The demo was nearly seven minutes long, and for it to be played on the radio, the production team had it fade out around 2:16.

Because Betty did not tour until summer of 1965, and because she often did not appear in photos, many believed the Shangri-Las were a trio.
-----

Between 1964 and 1966 The Shangri-Las charted frequently with heartbreaking teen melodramas, and remain best known for "Leader of the Pack" and "Remember (Walkin' in the Sand)."

The Shangri-Las' were known for their "tough girls" look. Having grown up in a rough neighborhood of Queens, they had a harder, rougher edge than other female groups. Many other acts, who had never seen them, assumed they were Black.

There were many rumors about wild escapades. In one instance, there was a story that Mary Weiss was in trouble with the FBI for transporting a firearm across state lines. In her defense, she said someone tried to break into her hotel room one night, and for protection she bought a pistol. The group believed their reputation helped fend off advances from other musicians when they toured.

The group was formed at Andrew Jackson High School in Cambria Heights, Queens, New York, in 1963. It consisted of two sets of sisters: lead singer Mary Weiss and sister Betty and identical twins Marguerite "Marge" and Mary Ann Ganser The girls often appeared as a trio, since Betty rarely appeared on stage until late 1965, preferring to avoid touring.

They began playing school shows, talent shows, and teen hops, when they captured the attention of Artie Ripp, who arranged the group's first record deal with Kama Sutra. Their first recording in December 1963 was "Simon Says," later issued on the Smash label, on which Betty Weiss sang lead. They also recorded "Wishing Well" / "Hate To Say I Told You So," which became their first release in early 1964 when leased to the small Spokane label.

Initially, the girls performed without a name. But when they signed their first deal, they began calling themselves the Shangri-Las, after a Queens restaurant.

Mary Weiss was the main lead singer; Betty, however, took lead on "Maybe," and a number of B-sides and album tracks. One of The Ganser Twins took lead on "I'm Blue," which is a cover of the Ikettes biggest hit at the time, and was included on their 1965 album Shangri-Las 65!.One of the twins also takes the lead on "Sophisticated Boom Boom" b-side of "Long Live Our Love."

In April 1964, when the girls were still minors, their parents signed with Red Bird Records; the Ganser twins were 16, Mary was 15 and Betty was 17. They had their first success with the summer hit, "Remember (Walking in the Sand)" The recordings for Morton featured lavish production with heavy orchestration and sound effects, and their next and biggest hit.

The Shangri-Las continued to chart in the U.S., specializing in adolescent themes such as alienation, loneliness, abandonment and death. Singles included "Give Him a Great Big Kiss," "Out in the Streets," "Give Us Your Blessings," the top ten hit "I Can Never Go Home Anymore," "Long Live Our Love," "He Cried" and the spoken-word "Past, Present and Future," featuring music from Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata."

Famous lines from "Give Him a Great Big Kiss" include "When I say I'm in love, you best believe I'm in love, L-U-V," and "Well I hear he's bad." "Hmm, he's good-bad, but he's not evil."

The group appeared on several TV shows, but in 1966 two of three releases on Red Bird failed to crack the U.S. top 50, although the group remained popular in England and Japan.

Mary Ann Ganser left but returned when Marge—the most outspoken member, sometimes considered the leader — left early in 1967. Then Red Bird Records folded. The group signed with Mercury Records. but the label showed a lack of enthusiasm for the group. During their Mercury stint, the Shangri-Las had no further hits. In 1968, they disbanded.

Court fights ensued with the group claiming they received meager royalties, despite the millions of records they sold.

Abbott silent on Pay Equity

The pay equity gap between men and women would not be closed by a Liberal Opposition which is more interested in exploiting it to reduce the cost of its unrealistic paid parental leave scheme.

Rather than suggesting how to raise the average pay of women to the same level as men, Tony Abbott and the Liberals would prefer to keep women’s pay low to reduce the cost impact of their PPL proposal, said ACTU President Ged Kearney.

Today, the Liberals' Finance Spokesman Andrew Robb has admitted there is a gender pay equity gap, but there is total silence from the Opposition about how to close it, Ms Kearney said.

"Across the average of men and women, men do typically earn more money." (Andrew Robb quoted on ABC Online, 27 July 2010).

"Under the former Liberal Government’s WorkChoices laws, pay inequality grew for the first time in 25 years, with cuts to real minimum wages, the removal of the award system that allowed for test cases to lift basic conditions, and the use of individual contracts," Ms Kearney said.

"Today, as a consequence, the gender pay gap is 18%, with the average woman worker earning $239 a week less than the average male. Women earn $1 million less than men over their working lives.

"Labor's new Fair Work laws for the first time provide an avenue for cases to be launched on pay equity grounds, and unions are currently pursuing a landmark test case to lift the pay of workers in the female-dominated social and community services sector.

"The Labor Government has been supportive of this case, but typically, Tony Abbott and the Liberals have been silent on how to close the pay gap for women.

"Despite his apparent recent conversion, Tony Abbott has a lifelong record of disdain towards the issues that matter to working women.

"He famously said a national paid parental leave scheme would only be introduced his 'dead body'. He begrudgingly allowed Labor’s scheme to pass into law – an historic reform by the Labor Government that follows decades of campaigning by unions and women's groups.

"Tony Abbott knows his own parental leave scheme has no chance of ever becoming reality, but he continues to mislead working women.

"Tony Abbott simply cannot be trusted by working women."

Snow

[from El Tribuno, Saturday July 17, 2010]

Salta dressed in white

The snow began late on Thursday and lasted all day yesterday. Whole families of tourists and Salteños packed nearby towns such as Vaqueros and San Lorenzo.

View from Vaqueros | Snow along the side of the road, people enjoying the moment; a postcard repeated around the city and the towns.

It was an unforgettable Friday. The historic day began on Thursday night when sleet appeared as an awaited miracle; later snowflakes began to accumulate and to paint Salta’s silhouette white. Yesterday morning began with joy and a contagious enthusiasm that the youngest passed along to the adults.

The snow that fell all night and most of the day can only be compared with that long ago Monday, July 10, 2000.
Not since then has such an event occurred. What particularly sets this apart, said the INTA meteorologist, Ignacio Nieva, is the duration of the snowfall, which began in the late hours of Thursday night. "It is a phenomenon quite unique and surprising because of the duration and extent of the precipitation," he said.

For this reason children, adults, and seniors had the great opportunity to enjoy the snow for several hours.
The majority chose to go by car to San Lorenzo and Vaqueros. Roads, around noon, experienced unusual traffic, to the degree that just as in summer, driving was at a crawl.

The shoulders of provincial route 28, the road to San Lorenzo, were filled all the way to the top of Castellanos.
Impromptu snowball fights, competitions to build the largest snowman, and even photo shoots with ingenious poses were the activities that prevailed throughout the Salteña morning.

The people’s joy

"It'll be on Facebook, Mami," a teenager clicking his camera madly told a woman who was piling up a mound of projectiles.
"If that happens, I'll kill you, Baby," the mother shouted as she raised a finger.

The cold didn’t disturb the San Lorenzo River, where during siesta fun and smiles reigned.
"This is a blessing," a nun who visited the Quebrada yesterday told The Tribune. "The snow, like rain, they fall for everyone. It's moving,” she said.

On many cars one could see a snowman.
In several cases these were arranged irresponsibly, to the point of blocking the view of drivers who circled the highways as their sculptures melted.

Cafayate

For Cafayate, yesterday was a historic day.
No townspeople remember when the snow marker, the San Isidro mountain, as it is known, awoke so covered in a white blanket, as happened yesterday. Cafayateños and many tourists turned their cameras and camcorders to this marker, which continued to cause admiration among the people.

General Guemes

General Guemes dawned white.
The municipality always measures a temperature 4-5 degrees higher than Salta; it’s warmer in summer and less cold in winter. However, yesterday, Cobos, near Campo Santo, was a snow scene and became a meeting point for families, many of whom never had had the chance to touch this phenomenon.

Metán

Metán had an amazing sunrise.
The trees on the sidewalks, roofs, green spaces, and cars were dressed in white and many people took the opportunity to build snowmen. The highest precipitation was observed in the mountains west of the city, in the San Cayetano and AMEC neighborhoods. It was one of the largest snowfalls in recent decades.

Rosario de la Frontera

La Ciudad Termal had to wait 11 years to see snow.
El Naranjo, a tourist town located a few kilometers from the town, became the favorite spot by the Rosarinos to watch the snow across the mountains. "In Rosario de la Frontera the last snowfall was recorded on July 11, 1999," recalled a neighbor, watching the hills covered by a white blanket.

April - July 2010 weather

The green line along the bottom indicates precipitation: 0 = clear skies; 10 = rain or snow; note the July snowstorm.

SONG OF THE WEEK - "Young Blood" by The Naked And Famous

"Young Blood" by The Naked And Famous

"We lie beneath the stars at night
Our hands gripping each other tight
You keep my secrets hope to die
Promises, swear them to the sky..."

Already a #1 hit in their homeland of New Zealand, "Young Blood" is an infectious electropop song that builds with a repetitive drum beat, crashing guitars and a wave of synthesizers to an overall anthemic feel. Ahh to be young... From their upcoming album
"Passive Me Aggressive You" (2010).

Xtrata: Tahmoor Colliery strike

Sadly, the basic instinct of Xstrata Coal Management is as it always has been. Supress all honest workers. First, they begin by trying to beat you up. If this fails, they will even try to poison you and your families with hate mail sent to your private homes. Fear not for their war chest is full of nothing but educated insolence. First Xstrata will ignore you, then they try to humilate and laugh at you, then they fight you tooth and nail, and then, in time, you will win. I've learned over the years that workers will in time forget much of what Xstrata said to them, workers may even in time forget what Xstrata did to them, but the workers will never forget how Xstrata made them and their families feel during their struggle for nothing more than a fair outcome. It has become appallingly obvious to all of us that Xstrata's corperate strength, technology, and wealth gained by them through the sweat of their own workers has exceeded their tragic lack of all humanity, if they indeed had any at all to begin with.

Abbott's childcare plan exposed

Tony Abbott has promised to delay introducing new rules requiring childcare providers to hire more teachers with better qualifications.

He argues that the planned changes would spark fee increases for parents.

The Liquor Hospitality and Miscellaneous Workers Union, which represents 110,000 childcare workers, said Mr Abbott's plan threatened the future of quality childcare.

Assistant national secretary Sue Lines said parents should be deeply concerned by his plans to remove and delay quality childcare reforms.

"In making this promise, Tony Abbott is ignoring the fact that the childcare quality reforms have already received a glowing endorsement following a mammoth consultation process with all stakeholders across the country," Ms Lines said.

A Decade of L.E.A.D.

Human resources departments have emerged as a powerful force in big organisations, but a new book suggests they fail in their most crucial function - helping humans.

A Decade of L.E.A.D. (the Leadership, Employment and Direction survey), which charted workplace attitudes in Australia in the past decade, revealed that while the ranks of HR managers had swollen, the number of staff who believed their needs were being met by them had fallen.

Researchers, analysing data from four big workplace surveys dating to 2003, found the proportion of employees who believed the HR department was addressing their concerns had fallen from 60 per cent to less than 50 per cent.

In the most recent results, about 40 per cent of employees said HR had a poor or very poor awareness of what their issues actually were.

"HR departments are plagued by contradiction - they are trying to meet employee needs and expectations on one hand, and the needs and expectations of managers and shareholders," Sydney University workplace expert Professor John Shields said.

A Decade of L.E.A.D. suggested human resources departments were leaning more towards their paymasters than general employees, and a much larger proportion of managers professed to be happy with their activities.

The chairman of the Human Resources Institute of Australia, Peter Wilson, said human resources departments were not meant to be trade unions.

"HR is about reconciling the interests of staff and management and in our view they do that very successfully," Mr Wilson said.

Ark Tribe Trial - Adjourned Again

On Thursday 22 July, Ark Tribe's trial heard all the evidence from key witnesses and will now be adjourned until September 13.

Magistrate David Whittle will receive written and oral submissions on the day. He’ll announce his findings after that on a later date to be determined.

Ark’s lawyers throughout the three day hearing have continually objected to the evidence brought forward, maintaining the case is not only unlawful and illegal but outside of the powers of the ABCC.

It was also revealed during the course of proceedings, that Australian Building and Construction Commission (ABCC) inspector Seamus Flynn admitted he had no evidence that Ark Tribe even attended the union meeting in question. Yet the ABCC’s coercive powers were used anyway.

July 26: "The Queen of Motown," Mary Wells died on this date in 1992...

... she was 49 years-old when she died from cancer.

Known as "The Queen of Motown" Mary Wells was one of the Detroit-based labels first singing superstars until her departure from the company in 1964, at the height of her popularity.

With a string of hit singles composed mainly by Smokey Robinson, including "Two Lovers," the Grammy-nominated "You Beat Me to the Punch" and her signature hit, "My Guy," Wells was part of the charge in black music onto radio stations and record shelves of mainstream America.
-----
Mary Esther Wells was born in Detroit. Wells used singing as her comfort by age 10 had graduated from church choirs to performing at local nightclubs in the Detroit area. Wells graduated from Detroit's Northwestern High School at the age of 17 and set her sights on becoming a scientist, but after hearing about the success of Detroit musicians such as Jackie Wilson and The Miracles, she decided to try her hand at music as a singer-songwriter.

In 1960, 17-year-old Wells approached Tamla Records founder Berry Gordy at Detroit's Twenty Grand club with a song she had hoped Jackie Wilson would record. Gordy insisted Wells sing the song in front of him. Impressed, Gordy had Wells enter Detroit's United Sound Studios to record the single, titled "Bye Bye Baby." Gordy signed Wells to the Motown subsidiary of his expanding record label and released the song as a single in late 1960; it eventually peaked at No 8 on the R&B chart in 1961, later crossed over to the pop singles chart, where it peaked at number 45.

In 1961, Wells became the first Motown female artist to have a Top 40 pop single with "I Don't Want to Take a Chance." In the fall of that year, Motown issued her first album and released a third single, the bluesy ballad "Strange Love." However when that record failed to chart, Gordy set Wells up with The Miracles' lead singer Smokey Robinson.

The collaboration paid dividends; Wells' became the label's first female star and its first fully successful solo artist.
Wells' teaming with Robinson led to a succession of hit singles over the following two years. Their first collaboration, 1962's "The One Who Really Loves You," was Wells' first smash hit, peaking at No. 2 on the R&B chart and No. 8 on the Hot 100.

Next Motown released the similar-sounding "You Beat Me to the Punch" a few months later. The song became her first R&B No. 1 single and peaked at No. 9 on the pop chart. The success of "You Beat Me to the Punch" helped to make Wells the first Motown star to be nominated for a Grammy Award when the song received a nod in the Best Rhythm & Blues Recording category.

-----
In late 1962, "Two Lovers" became Wells' third consecutive single to hit the Top 10 of Billboard's Hot 100, peaking at No. 7 and becoming her second No. 1 hit on the R&B charts. This helped to make Wells the first female solo artist to have three consecutive Top 10 singles on the pop chart. The track sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.

Wells was their favorite American singer

Wells' second album,  titled The One Who Really Loves You, was released in 1962 and peaked at No. 8 on the pop albums chart, making the teenage singer a breakthrough star and giving her clout at Motown. Wells' success at the label was recognized when she became a headliner during the first string of Motortown Revue concerts, starting in the fall of 1962.

Wells' continued to consistently hit the top 20, then in 1964, Wells recorded and released "My Guy." The Smokey Robinson song became her trademark single, reaching No. 1 on the Cashbox R&B chart for seven weeks and becoming the No. 1 R&B single of the year. The song successfully crossed over and became Wells' second million-selling single.

To build on the song's success, Motown released a duet album recorded with fellow Motown singing star Marvin Gaye, Together. The album peaked at No. 1 on the R&B album chart and No. 42 on the pop album chart, and yielded the double-sided hits "Once Upon a Time" and "What's the Matter With You Baby."

Mary's relationship with Motown soured, mostly over royalties. . Angry that the money made from "My Guy" was being used to promote The Supremes, and meager royalties from the contract she signed when she was 17, the singer siled a lawsuit. Wells won and accepted a $200,000 contract with 20th Century Fox Records.

Wells' eponymous first 20th Century Fox release only had one top 40 hit, "Use Your Head." The album was considered a flop.

In 1966, Wells signed with Atlantic Records subsidiary Atco where Wells scored her final Top 10 R&B hit with "Dear Lover," which also became a modestly successful pop hit, peaking at No. 51. However, much like her tenure with 20th Century Fox, the singer struggled to come up with a follow-up hit, and in 1968 she left the label for Jubilee Records, where she scored her final pop hit, "The Doctor."

Though Wells has been eligible for induction to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame - she was nominated twice in 1986 and 1987 - she has yet to achieve it.
