At any other time, Dorell Wright’s signing with the Warriors would have been a prime topic of debate, about how the Heat went for the potential of the prep forward in 2004 ahead of the polish of Jameer Nelson.
But don’t compare this to the unloading of Michael Beasley to the Timberwolves for cap space.
Had the Heat not made this dramatic move to LeBron James and Chris Bosh, Wright well might have found himself back next season, perhaps even in a somewhat significant role.
Eventually, he emerged as such a serviceable player that James Jones got shuffled to the end of the rotation.
Had Shaquille O’Neal not arrived mere weeks after Wright was drafted, these first six years of Wright’s NBA career could have been far different.
From that perspective, it’s probably better that the Heat did not utilize its No. 18 pick in this year’s draft. That pick well may have never seen the light of day.
Wright worked hard, made some not-so-great decisions off the court, hardly got in the way.
He was not Goof Troop to the degree of Daequan Cook.
But, as with Cook and Beasley, this is no place for kids, just like the Heat’s 2006 championship roster was no place for kids.
