August 17: Actress and singer, Pearl "Mae" Bailey, died on this day in 1990 from coronary artery disease...

.. she was 72 at the time of her death.

Pearl started her career in vaudeville, and in 1946, made her Broadway debut in St. Louis Woman. Her single, "Takes Two to Tango" hit the top ten in 1952.

In 1968, she won a Tony Award for the title role in the all-black production of Hello, Dolly! During the 1970s she had her own television show. Pearl also provided voices in animated films including Tubby the Tuba in 1976, and Disney's The Fox and the Hound in 1981. In 1986, she won a Daytime Emmy award for her performance as a fairy godmother in the ABC Afterschool Special, Cindy Eller: A Modern Fairy Tale.
