August 17: American lyricist Ira Gershwin died on this day in 1983 at the age of 86.
Born "Israel Gershowitz" in New York City, Ira formed half of a prolific composing duo- along with brother George- that produced some of the most memorable Broadway shows including "Porgy and Bess." Among the many, many songs they wrote included the popular standards "I Got Rhythm", "The Man I Love," "They Can't Take That Away From Me," "Embraceable You," "The Man I Love" and "Someone to Watch Over Me." Woody Allen's movie "Manhattan," featured a Gershwin soundtrack.
