R.I.P. Teena Marie (1956-2010)


Teena Marie was an R&B/funk singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who unexpectedly passed away on Sunday December 26, 2010 at the age of 54. Known as Lady T, she was an early protegée of the late funk legend Rick James. She released her debut album "Wild and Peaceful" in 1979 which featured the track "I'm a Sucker For Your Love" (#8 R&B) written & produced by James. Her follow-up and subsequence albums were nearly all written & produced by Marie herself. She is also credited as becoming one of the first successful white female singers in the R&B genre. In the early '80's, she enjoyed a string of successful hit singles & albums. Including the hit songs, "Behind The Grove" (#21 R&B, 1980), "I Need Your Lovin' " (#37 Pop, #9 R&B, 1980), "Lovergirl" (#4 Pop, #9 R&B, 1984), and in 1988 Marie hit #1 on the R&B chart with "Ooo La La La" (#85 Pop, #1 R&B). In 2004, she released her gold selling album "La Doña" which featured her Grammy nominated duet song with Gerald Levert "I'm Still In Love" (#23 R&B, #70 Pop) and "I Got You", a duet with Rick James (his last known recording before his death). Her last studio album, "Congo Square" (#20 Pop, #4 R&B) was released in 2009.
