My Mixed Tape - April 1991

APRIL 1991

Here's a look at what I thought was cool 20 years ago (I apologize). It's an eclectic mix of songs. Some are now classics like R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion", The Black Crowes' "She Talks To Angels" and Marc Cohn's "Walking In Memphis", but many of these songs haven't stood the test of time and are forgettable. Does anyone remember the female trio The Triplets? How about Keedy's "Save Some Love"? Or Donny Osmond's "Love Will Survive"? Nope. Neither did I. I actually had to research several song titles from this tape because I couldn't remember the songs myself. What were you grooving to in April of 1991?

SIDE A

"Love Is a Wonderful Thing" by Michael Bolton
A #4 charting pop hit which Bolton probably wishes he never recorded. In 1994, he along with fellow writer Andrew Goldmark were found liable for copyright infringement due to multiple similarities between their song and The Isley Brothers "Love Is a Wonderful Thing" (1964). They were ordered to pay the Isleys an estimated amount of over $5 million in royalties. Slightly unfair if you actually listen to both versions.

"My Heart Is Failing Me" by Riff
R&B vocal group from New Jersey who hit #25 Pop/#6 R&B.

"Save Some Love" by Keedy
#15 hit from her debut album Chase The Clouds.

"What Comes Naturally" by Sheena Easton
Last North American top 40 hit (#19) for Easton.

"Backyard" by Pebbles feat. Salt-n-Pepa
4th single from her Always album. The song peeked at #73 Pop/#4 R&B

"You Don't Have To Go Home Tonight" by The Triplets

"How Much Is Enough" by The Fixx

"Losing My Religion" by R.E.M.
Grammy winner for Best Pop Performance.

U.K. rockers Epsom Mad Funkers or EMF debut single
hit #3 UK/#1 US.

"Mama Said Knock You Out" by LL Cool J
#17 hitting song also won LL Cool J the Grammy for Best Rap Performance (1992).

Taken from the New Jack City Soundtrack.
