August 9: Jerome John "Jerry" Garcia died of a heart attack on this day in 1995, eight days after his 53rd birthday.

Garcia was a founding member, lead guitarist, singer and songwriter with the legendary group, Grateful Dead. He performed with the Dead from 1965 to 1995.

Garcia was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Grateful Dead in 1994.

In 2003, he was ranked 13th in Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" cover story.
